Ben Sherman Clothes (as well as the man himself) is a real British success story! The Ben Sherman Label is considered to be one of the best clothing brands in the world and it all started in Brighton... Ben Sherman History

Arthur Bernard Sugarman was born in Brighton in 1925 and the son of a Jewish salesman. He emigrated to the United States in 1946, via Canada, and changed his nationality to American, where he married the daughter of a Californian clothes producer. After this (and perhaps even because of it) he decided to move back to his home town and bought a concourse shirt factory and began producing his wares from his small factory in the 50's, employing only 10 people.

1963 was a big year for Mr. Sugarman..... The Beatles released their first LP and in his Brighton factory one of Britain's most enduring fashion icons was born. It was in this year that Arthur Sugarman re-branded his label (as well as his own name) to Ben Sherman and began the first production run of the classic button-down collared shirt. Mr. Sherman opened his first retail outlet next to the factory in the same year and the 'Ben Sherman cult' was born. The shirts were adopted by the youth movements of the day, none more so than the scooter-riding mods.

The Ben Sherman label was also the first to introduce skateboards to the UK in the mid 60's. Music groups like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Police, The Kinks and many others were outfitted with his unique brand. In 1975 Sherman himself sold the company and moved Australia, where the label was also launched, with great success.

In the 1980's and 1990's Ben Sherman continued its success and even now this is being repeated throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and Australia. Driven from its Times Square Showroom in New York, Ben Sherman is rapidly becoming the must-have brand for leading stores throughout the United States! With Internationally acclaimed groups such as Brit-pop Blur and Oasis, as well as MTV host Carson Daly, Fatboy Slim, Superstar Moby, Bare Naked Ladies, Incubus and many other musicians and celebrities proclaiming themselves Ben Sherman followers, it is now the 4th largest casual wear brand in the UK and, with 40 years of heritage currently being displayed at Brighton Museum and Art Gallery until July 27, Ben Sherman is now established as a world-class lifestyle brand and, perhaps more importantly, a true British success story!
