Bench History

The Bench brand started in 1989 as a t-shirt brand, with designs influenced by BMX biking and skateboarding. At this time the Bench label had sprung up as a small menswear brand and was considered a cool underground label known for its strong graphic based printed T-shirts and sweats.

During its conception in Manchester, the city had a thriving music scene that symbolised a 'rave based' alternate lifestyle, and the brand has always veered away from the Americanised sports culture norm (banking on the sports celebrities of the age) and instead capitalized on the inspiration from the 'arrogant' and 'anti-fashion' trends of the time.

The brand's Manchester roots can be seen in the way many of the satellite stores around the UK as they use a montage of the Manchester skyline as a design on both their messenger bags and price tags. Bench expanded into women's wear in 1998. Although the label is distinctly British it is sold across the world, including in Europe, Canada, USA and Australia and although it continues to appeal to a wide demographic, its designs retain a sense of independent culture too.
