Gio Goi History
The label has its roots in the Manchester band scene of the late 1980s, which mixed indie rock and dance music. The Donnelly's started out selling clothes and memorabilia at clubs and raves in Manchester, notably at The Haçienda where they began supplying clothes for The Happy Mondays singer Shaun Ryder, Oasis, Blur, Primal Scream and New Order.
The late 1980s and early 1990s saw some of the most remarkable progress any brand can designer could hope for. Unfortunately, due to legalities of over the usage of 'Goi' by Giorgio Armani, the Donnelly's chose to cease traiding until 2005, when Gio-Goi relaunched after new financial backers were keen to revive the brand. In their 2007 Spring/Summer range, Gio-Goi collaborated with Pete Doherty to create a colourful range of T-shirts sporting slogans such as 'Drug-Free' and 'Too Much Rock & Roll'. The line was exclusively available from Selfridges in London on December 7, 2006 for 30 days and was released to selected stores thereafter.
Today, at 21, Gio-Goi is stronger than ever, adding denim, footwear, accessories and eyewear to its already burgeoning core range. Stocked throughout the UK in key independent stores, multiples and online - including the Gio-Goi webstore - the brand is also rapidly expanding across Europe.
